Gartner published at June 30 an update of it’s Magic Quadrant for x86 Server Virtualization Infrastructure. This is an analyse of solutions and players in the server virtualization market.
Not surprisingly Microsoft and Citrix moved a bit closer to VMware since last years publication of Gartner. I think the next coming years we will see this picture being not changed a lot. VMware will be on the lead for the next years to come. The rest at a distance. Soon we will see the release of the next version of vSphere featuring a lot of exciting new features.
Hyper-V is a good hypervizor and combined with SCVMM it will fit most of the needs of small and medium business of performance, features and most important costs. For enterprise use, with lots of hosts, complex configurations and business critical virtual machines demanding lots of storage IO, Hyper-V will show its not mature enough for this market especially at the storage layer.
The Magic Quadrants below show the situation at June 2011 and is taken from the Gartner report .
