Start with an assessment before you virtualize

Any virtualization project whether it be cloud, datacenter or desktop should start with an infrastructure and/or business case assessment.  Looking at all of the virtualization projects we’ve done over the past few years, the ones that included an assessment in the beginning were the most successful and performed the best.  An assessment not only shows you what you have in your environment, but helps define what will work as a virtualized workload and the resources needed.  When you add everything together, the big picture is well defined.  A proper assessment not only looks at workloads to be virtualized, but the whole datacenter from the network, storage, security, change control, etc.  When designing a successful virtualized datacenter, the infrastructure and interrelated components  all need to be considered.

Assessments can be simple or complex depending on the systems to be virtualized and the business needs to support them.  If a consultant wants to jump in and sell you equipment without offering an assessment first, beware and consider a different firm.
